The stray animals of the town of Veroia are asking for your HELP!!

To all people who fight for the animal rights,
We are volunteers, members of the Animal Wellfare Assosiation of Imathia (ZO.I.) and we are acting in Veroia, a small town of Northern Greece.
Almost every day through the past years, stray - and not only - animals (dogs and cats) are poisoned by unknown people who hate animals.
As poison they use pesticides which causes a very painfull death to the poor animals.
Everybody in Greece can buy these poisons for free.

Only in the last 6 months over 100 dogs and cats were poisoned on the streets! Last week-end at least 6 more dogs were killed in this way.
Most of them were sterilized, harmless  and they were seeking only for a little bit love.
We are desparate, we dont know what else to do. We are doing all the nesessary procedures in order to prevent these kind of actions and to increase the awareness of the local society but nothing changes. We also coorporate in a national and international level with other N.G.O.s  for the animal rights.
The municipality sadly is indifferent about this issue, even though the stray animals, according to the Greek law, are in their responsibility and does not react at all against the poisonings.
We lost all of our hope for a better life of the strays animals of our region. We are desparate and we are now asking for your help.
Please send e-mail or a fax to the mayor of Veroia with your complains about this kind of cruelty against the stray animals of Veroia and by asking from the Mayor Mrs Haroula Ousoultzoglou to take action against those of the citizens who use these awfull and barbarian methods for vanishing the poor stray  animals.

Thanks in advance!

The stray animals of the town of Veroia are asking for your HELP!!

sehr schmerzhaften Tod verursacht.

The Association’s financial resources are exclusively originating from members’ donations, which in many cases is direly insufficient to cover the maintenance expenses and those necessary for the care of stray dogs and cats of the region.

For these reasons it needs & deserves your help!

How Much Is That Doggy in the Window?

by Janet Crease

How much she is that doggy in the window, the one with the waggely tail...

"Can we take it home with us mom?"

"How much is that doggie in the window?"

"For you lady it's fifty dollars" says the shopkeeper.

"So expensive" says mom. "Oh well, I guess it's something for the children to play with over the holidays."

"A home at last", thinks Puppy to itself.

"What's that on the carpet?" yells dad.

"Where are my sneakers?" says son.

Chewed sneakers, a puddle of pee on the carpet, a steaming brown pile of something in the corner, whining and crying from Pup...

"Put that thing outside" yells mom.

"I thought this was going to be a great place" thinks Pup, shivering and wet outside. "Everyone is screaming, yelling and kicking me, I just needed to pee!"

"Put that dog on a chain" yells mom, and leave it there.

More whining and crying from Pup.

"Shut up! Shut up!" yells the family and the neighbours.

Days later, peace and bliss reigns once more in the household, kids watch video games, mom and dad go about their lives. Life has got back to normal for the family.

"Anyone seen the dog?" asks dad. "No? Well, put some food out the back, it will come when it's hungry. Did it eat its last meal? Stupid dog, doesn't know when it's well off."

Tired, cold and hungry, Pup finds itself in the back of a truck and then at the Animal Shelter.

Pup thinks to itself, "This is better, food, water and no kids to pull me around and a nice warm secure place to sleep. Heaps of company, I want to stay here forever".

It's Xmas holiday time, the Shelter is overloaded, too many dumped and unwanted dogs.

"Hello Puppy" says the friendly vet. "Now, this won't hurt a bit, just a little sting."

"Night night Pup" says the attendant for more times than she has wished to utter those final words, as she cradles the puppy against her. "Off to the Rainbow Bridge".

Family at home. "I wonder what happened to that nuisance Puppy. It was a real pain in the neck, all that mess" says dad.

Peace reigns within.

How much is that Doggy in the window, the one with the waggly tail.

I found your dog today. No, he has not been adopted by anyone.  Most of us who live out here own as many dogs as we want.  Those who do not own dogs do so because they choose not to.

I know you hoped he would find a good home when you left him out here, but he did not.  When I first saw him he was miles from the nearest house and he was alone, thirsty, thin and limping from a burr on his paw.  How I wish I could have been you as I stood before him.  To see his tail wag and his eyes brighten as he bounded into your arms, knowing you would find him, knowing you had not forgotten him.  To see the forgiveness in his eyes for the suffering and pain he had known in his never-ending quest to find you.

But, I was not you and despite all my persuasion his eyes saw a stranger he did not trust.  He would not come.  He turned and continued his journey - one he was sure would bring him to you.  He does not understand you are not looking for him.  He only knows you are out there.  He only knows he must find you.  This is more important than food or water or the stranger who can give him these things.  Persuasion and pursuit seemed futile.

I did not even know his name.  I drove home, filled a bucket with water and a bowl with food and returned to where we had met.  I could see no sign of him, but I left my offering under the tree where he had sought shelter from the sun and a chance to rest.  You see, he is not of the wild.  When you domesticated him you took away any instinct of survival out there.

His purpose demands that he travel during the day.  He doesn't know that the sun and the heat will claim his life.  He only knows that he has to find you.

I waited hoping he would return to the tree, hoping my gift would build en element of trust so I might bring him home, remove the burr from his foot, give him a cool place to lie and help him understand that the part of his life with you is now over.

He did not return that morning and at dusk the water and food were still there untouched.  And, I worried. You must understand that many people would not attempt to help your dog.  Some would run him off.  Others would call the county or police and the fate you thought you saved him from would be preempted by his suffering for days without food or water.

I returned again before dark.  I did not see him.  I went again early the next morning only to find the food and water still untouched.  If only you were here to call his name.  Your voice is so familiar to him.

I began pursuit in the direction he had taken yesterday, doubt overshadowing my hope of finding him.  His search for you was desperate.  It could take him many miles in 24 hours.

It is hours later and a good distance from where we first met, but I found your dog.

His thirst has stopped.  It is no longer a torment to him.  His hunger has disappeared.  He no longer aches.  The burrs in his paws bother him no more.  Your dog has been set free from his burdens.

You see, your dog has died.  I knelt next to him and I curse you for not being here yesterday so I could see the glow, if just for a moment, in those now vacant eyes.

I pray that his journey has taken him to that place I think you hoped he would find.

If only you knew what he went through to reach it.  And, I agonize for I know that were he to awaken at this moment and if I were to be you, his eyes would sparkle with recognition and his tail would wag with forgiveness.

ASKING FOR HELP FOR ANOTHER 3LEG DOG FROM VERIAAfter the happy end for the 3 leg dog Alfy, who was adopted in Amsterdam, we are now asking for help for another 3 leg dog.

The sweet female dog of the photo was found some months before (in summer)  injured in both her back legs, after she was hitten by a car.
The vet who examined her said that she was gonna be alright because she had reflexes in the legs.
She stayed in a foster house and we lost her trails for a while.
Until some days before, when we learned that the foster family dident want her anymore so, we had to put
her in a storage place, because we dont have a proper place to keep dogs for a while.
Unfortunetly, when we saw her we realized that her condition was getting worst, she had no improvement and she was still crawling her back legs. She had also injures in the back legs, so we took her to the vet, who said that her back left leg must be cut ergently and afterwards we must put wheels in the back legs, because the other back leg has also problem.
Now we are wondering if we can find a place for her after the mutilation
She is very - very sweet, 7 months years old, small size (5-6- kilos) and with a huge willingness to live.
So, if you think that  you can help anyhow, especially by finding a place for her, or by supporting us financially for the expenses of the operation etc, please let us know.
We think that she deserves one more oportunity to live.

Thank you

Cash injection for Greek strays

- Muslims break taboo to allow guide dog into mosque -

From The Sunday Times December 23, 2007 - A RETRIEVER is in training to become the first dog in Britain to be permitted to enter a mosque, acting as a guide for its blind Muslim owner. The animal has been chosen because it salivates less than usual, thus reducing the risk of flicking spittle onto other worshippers at the Al Falah mosque in Leicester. Keeping pet dogs is considered “haram” (the Arabic word for “forbidden”) in Islamic teaching, because they are regarded as unclean, particularly their saliva. The mosque took its decision after advice from imams and scholars at the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), who carried out a full review of Islamic teaching on dogs. The animal is now being trained by the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association to curb its natural friendly instinct to jump up and lick people. The retriever is being taught to sit in a purpose-built kennel outside the prayer hall of the mosque and wait for its owner, Mahomed Khatri, 17, to come out after worship. Khatri is being trained to handle the dog, which will enable him to worship more often at the Al Falah. He is expected to pay his first visit with the dog early next year. Ibrahim Mogra, a senior imam at the MCB, who has overseen the review of teaching on guide dogs, said they could be justified as they served an “urgent practical purpose”. He said: “We found the Koran allows Muslims to use dogs for hunting. So if Muslims can eat a prey bitten by dogs, then there should not be a problem using them to guide you if you are blind." The MCB reexamined the rules on dogs after incidents in which Muslim restaurant owners and taxi drivers refused customers with guide dogs. In June Sallahaddin Abdullah was fined £200 in Cambridge after he refused to allow a blind couple into his taxi because they had a guide dog.The MCB issued a ruling after saying British Muslims should allow guide dogs to enter restaurants and taxis.
